As students entered the art studio for the first time this week, they learned all about the rules and routines of the atelier. The rules are very similar to the ones in their classroom; our eyes are watching, ears are listening, bodies are still and mouths are quiet when someone is talking! It is very important to raise your hand if you have something to share and if we make a mistake, it is okay! We also have a quiet corner for the times when we just need to take a break (or a time out! :)
After reviewing classroom procedures, students finally got into the "fun stuff!" Together we read, "I Aint Gonna Paint No More" and discussed how we would like to paint. Then, students were introduced to three very important colors of paint: red, blue and yellow. We discovered that yellow paint reminds us of egg yolks and lemon pudding, red reminds us of strawberries, and blue reminds us of the sky. We quickly transformed into scientists and began to hypothesize - "What happens when two colors are mixed together?" The students would be investigating this question while using finger paint! Students were excited and eager to get their hands messy in the paint - some students quickly realized that when the paint was mixed, a new color was created! Other students dragged their fingers, knuckles and nails into the paint, making new shapes and lines.
By the end of class, many students were covered in paint and enjoyed this color-mixing sensory experience. To further their exploration on colors, students moved to the light table to see what happens when two transparent colors are overlapped (red and blue make purple!) As students continue to explore the atelier this year, they will also continue to explore with ideas of transparency, light and shadow, and color-mixing. I can't wait to observe future adventures!
