I’d first like to thank all the parents who ventured out to Back to School night – your presence made for a wonderful gathering! We hope to see even more parents come to our PTAA meetings, cultural celebrations, and other awesome school events! We could not do what we do without your help and support!
This week during art studio, students explored lines. We learned that many components create a picture (the elements of art!) and line is one factor that is very important. Lines make up everything! Students pointed out that there were lines on the floor, the walls and ceiling; that we physically make lines with our bodies; there are lines on the street; and everything we draw begins with a line!
All students had the opportunity to utilize string to create curvy, bumpy and wavy lines. After using string, students were introduced to wire and quickly realized that wire is easier to bend and shape. Students twisted and formed the wire into various geometric and organic shapes. – All shapes and pictures begin with a line! Preschool worked with string to paint a picture (an uncontrolled painting). After a guided discovery on paintbrushes, students created a more controlled painting, drawing various types of lines.
PreK and kindergarten students talked about making a series of paintings (more than one of the same painting) and made a series of two paintings using white paint on black paper and black paint on white paper! Although I only have a few hanging up in the studio currently, I hope to get more posted throughout the school within the next week. Please come in and take a look at these wonderful line designs.
As students painted horizontal, vertical, dotted, dashed, zigzag, bumpy, curvy and wavy lines, their work began to transform. One curvy line rapidly became water while straight lines were trees. Zigzag lines turned into the mountains while other lines became shapes. Line is the basis and the beginning of creating many forms of artwork – I encourage you all to go on a line and shape hunt and point out all that you see!
